Nothing could have red pilled me harder than my battle with disease during my coding career. For eight years, my complaints of abdominal and pelvic pain were dismissed. It started as side pain, like when you run too much. It progressed to feeling like an angry troll was stabbing me from the inside with an ice pick.
The pain got beyond what I could handle. It crept into every aspect of my life and became impossible to hide. Neighbors noticed I was walking differently. My boss started asking questions about the quality of my work. I couldn’t concentrate anymore. The pain had an impact on intimacy, which took a massive toll on my marriage. I couldn’t ignore it anymore, and I had to do something because my life was falling apart.
Words cannot express how much I did not want to go down the path of finding a doctor who would listen. If only there was a way to interview doctors before making the appointment. The system makes you choose a random doctor from a list of covered providers. It’s a game of roulette, and you pay to play. There was no alternative but to spin, baby spin, and pray to get a good one.
